Hello Students!

I hope you had a joyous Easter with your loved ones. This week we will continue to strengthen concepts related to assessment and its characteristics. This week you will evaluate the VRIP of assessment papers through case studies. Develop your focus on the following characteristics while you are evaluating the assessment papers and answer keys:

Clarity: All items should be phrased in a clear manner. Assessment items should avoid superfluous words and any metaphorical language. The language should be correctly written.
Validity: The examination measures / assesses age-appropriate concepts which the students have studied.
Reliability: Answers should be accepted on an agreed criterion. The answering key should minimize the element of subjectivity. Marks allocation should be realistic and align well with the space given to the students to write an answer.
Educational effect: The examination should promote learning rather than being an attempt to fail students. The answer key should have a well-rounded criteria for subjective type items.
Practical Implications: The assessment paper should state practical questions which are realistic for students to answer.
Layout: The layout of the paper should be as clear as possible to make it student friendly. The font and style of the assessment paper should be consistent. Each page should be numbered to avoid confusion. The question numbering system should be uniform across the assessment paper.
Item Difficulty level:Spread the assessment items over Bloom’s Taxonomy. The assessment paper should promote higher-order thinking skills (Synthesizing, Creation, Evaluation)

This is a group task. Group members are recommended to follow the following steps:

  1. Study the assessment papers along with their answer key and make individual notes.
  2. The members should consolidate their notes using an online software (explore!! some ideas are Coggle.it, Google Sheets, MindMeister etc.) and include your instructor so that individual contributions can be seen.
  3. As a group, propose recommendations to improve the VRIP of these assessment papers.
  4. The recommendations should be submitted by the group leaders (in a word document file) no later than 9:00pm on April 19, 2020
  5. Give recommendations under the sections of Validity, Reliability, Impact, Practicality
  6. Evaluate the sample assessment papers by considering that these are ready to be given out to candidates.
